36th Annual PAMA International Symposium

Glamor and Grit: Building an Entourage for Health

Saturday, June 30 - Tuesday, July 3, 2018

Chapman University, Orange, California, USA

The 2018 symposium will be oriented around combining all the facets that facilitate improved health support in the arts, to ensure that performing artists' needs are addressed from all angles.
  • Health education in performing arts training (physical and psychological)
  • Access to appropriate health care
  • Training & educating Performing Arts Medicine specialists to meet the needs of this population
  • Addressing the cultural biases that perpetuate unhealthy habits/practices in the arts
  • Creating safe working environments for performers

We encourage the submission of research-based abstracts. Educational abstracts as well as proposals for interactive workshops will also be accepted. Abstracts submitted to PAMA will be reviewed by the Research Committee. All professionals and students are encouraged to submit an abstract. Submissions are not restricted to PAMA members.

AGB Young Investigator Award

Submissions for the Alice G. Brandfonbrener Young Investigator Award are due October 15, 2017.

This award is given to an investigator in recognition of recently completed original research. The recipient is either still enrolled or is a recent graduate of an educational, training or residency program. The research and paper is usually the result of one of the first significant studies made by the author. The research and paper is not previously published to be considered for this award.

Martin Brandfonbrener Scholarship

Submission deadline is October 15, 2017

Criteria for selection:
  • Candidates will be Medical or Osteopathic students in their third or fourth year.
  • Preference will be given to students who have studied one of the performing arts.
The award includes:
  • Tuition waiver for the Symposium on Medical Problems of Performing Artists.
  • Stipend of $250 toward expenses for travel to the Symposium.

Call for Abstracts

Deadline - 5pm, January 12, 2018

You are invited to submit an abstract on topics t hat include a broad spectrum of research and practice relating to Performing Arts Medicine including various topics associated with the lifecycle of the performing artist. Participants selected by the program committee will have the opportunity to present and share their research to contribute to the conference objectives.

Call for Abstracts for ICPAM 2018
Abstract deadline: November 1st, 2017 23:59 CET

The scientific committee of the ICPAM2018 now welcomes abstracts for oral presentations as well as poster presentations for the International Conference on Performing Arts Medicine 2018 in The Hague The Netherlands.

The first day of ICPAM2018 is devoted to Musicians’ Medicine and the third day to Dance Medicine. On the ‘overlapping’ middle day, presentations with a more general character, appealing to a broader audience from both fields will be scheduled. The scientific committee invites presenters from all fields that connect to the theme: State of the Art in Performing Arts Medicine, including, but not limited to, clinical medicine, medical research, education, policy aspects and international relations in performing arts medicine.

Articles Wanted

Are you interested in being published in a magazine? International Musician magazine is accepting submissions for their wellness feature "To Your Health".

International Musician magazine is the official monthly publication of the American Federation of Musicians, serving 80,000 professional musicians in the United States and Canada. The readers of the International Musician are professional musicians working in all genres of music. They run the gamut from classical to country and from polka to punk. They tour and record. They play in clubs and in symphonies.

If you are a PAMA Member, please consider submitting an article. To Your Health articles should be around 650 words and written directly to the layman musician, who is not a health expert. The article should offer direct, helpful tips and advice, and not just information about various health conditions. All articles are subject to approval and editing from the editors.

Send your article to Dorry Allen at services@artsmed.org to be considered. You will be notified via email if your article has been accepted. Please note that the Research Committee will only review submissions received from currently active PAMA members in good standing with the organization.
