The 2018 symposium will combine all the facets that facilitate improved health support in the arts, to ensure that performing artists' needs are addressed from all angles. These include:
- Health education in performing arts training (physical and psychological)
- Access to appropriate health care
- Training & educating Performing Arts Medicine specialists to meet the needs of this population
- Addressing the cultural biases that perpetuate unhealthy habits/ practices in the arts
- Creating safe working environments for performers

The PAMA symposium is designed to meet the research and practice needs of physicians, therapists, athletic trainers, educators, artistic directors, and other health care and performing arts professionals who seek to improve the well-being of performing artists.

Essentials of Performing Arts Medicine

Extend your learning – Attend our 2-day pre-conference certificate course for practicing health professionals, performing artists, and arts educators.
The Essentials of Performing Arts Medicine is a two-day multidisciplinary enrichment course offered by the PAMA Education Committee. Designed to match the professional interests and career goals of health professionals, educators and performers, this course provides specific education and techniques for prevention, assessment, and care of performing arts-specific health concerns. Collectively on day 1, participants will hear introductory and research-informed lectures on health problems that are unique to performing artists including associated health risk factors, issues across the life-span, and the interactive, cultural, and contextual characteristics of health problems that are unique to performing artists. On day 2, participants will attend either the health professional or the performing arts stream for more detailed and targeted education and practical sessions related to providing and promoting optimal health for performing artists.
Certificate Exam
At the completion of the pre-conference course, all participants will have the option of taking an exam tailored to their area of specialization (medicine, allied health, voice, dance, instrumental music). If a passing grade is attained, they will be given a certificate of completion. Don’t miss this opportunity to advance your practice skills.
- Physician exam (physician exam open to any licensed medical doctor, including US trained DO’s with a current license to practice)
- Allied health exam (open to athletic trainers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, psychologists, chiropractors, nurses, licensed massage therapists, manual osteopathic practitioners [including non-US trained osteopaths], acupuncturists, and others as approved)
- Arts educator exam (voice, dance, or instrumental music)

Third USF-PAMA-The Music Gallery Piano Pedagogy Symposium is focused on the awareness of the body, touch and tone, coordinated techniques, mind-body connection, and longevity in learning, teaching and playing the piano. The Symposium presents masterclasses, chamber music coaching, jazz piano, flow in music making, and musician-tailored yoga.
Earlier this month, PAMA member Bill Dawson spoke to Butler University School of Music faculty and students about playing healthy.

Development Committee

Committee proposes the following levels of giving for members of PAMA to the Founders Legacy Fund (the 3 Awards of the Founders Legacy Fund are the Alice Brandfonbrener Scholarship, Martin Brandfonbrener Scholarship, and Richard Lederman Lecturer):
- Annual mandatory contribution of $500.00 by members of the Board
- Annual voluntary membership contribution of $250.00
Board Action: The Board thanked Kathleen for her accomplishment in creating the Founders Legacy Fund and her ideas to raise money for the Fund. The EC passed a motion for EC members to do a 1-time donation of $500 to the Founders Legacy Fund and voluntary donations thereafter. 100% participation by the Board for a 1-time donation with any amount at their discretion (no minimum dollar amount) was noted by the EC as important with voluntary donations by the Board thereafter. All members also have an opportunity to make Voluntary donations of any amount at their discretion. Once PAMA members show strong participation in the Fund, the Development Committee will be leveraged to seek donations from outside the organization.
- Committee proposes that a percentage of annual conference profits be designated to support the Fund. Chair will research with the Treasurer the current dollar amount of the three Awards in the Symposium budget as a context to a percentage that would be in the interest of both the sustainability of the Fund and the feasibility of the Organization.
Board Action: The Board agreed on $100 ($300 total) for the 3 awards to be paid by the Founders Legacy Fund. As the Fund grows, the 3 Awards will be supported by the Fund to a greater extent. Policy and Procedures Committee is working with Development Committee Chair and Board to update Policies and Procedures.
- Committee proposes that a letter of thanks and recognition be sent to every donor from the Development Chair, followed by a letter from Dorry for tax purposes. People like to be acknowledged for donations.

PAMA/ACSM Pre-conference Certificate Course
- The schedule is finalized and most speakers are assigned.
- The future plan for this course is to split days 1 and 2 so that day 2 can be offered to specific audiences at other organization’s meetings (e.g., ACSM; MTNA). It is the committee’s recommendation that PAMA move toward offering day 1 as an online module that would be mandatory for taking day 2 and for completion of the certificate. This will be a long-term goal of the committee.
- The committee requests that the position of Education Coordinator be extended for another year. The support has been invaluable to the Pre-conference Certificate Course organizers.

- Many PAMA members have offered webinars for the Musicians’ Health-Wellness webinar series with the College Music Society. A total of 14 have been produced so far. The Committee on Musicians’ Health is planning an additional 6 webinars for fall 2018-spring 2019. These are available to the general public free of charge approximately 2 weeks after original air date. Click here to access these webinars.
- Options for funding and creating a database of potential speakers is being discussed.
Music Teachers National Association

- For the fifth consecutive year, MTNA is offering a wellness track within Pedagogy Saturday 2018, the pre-conference event held one day prior to the MTNA National Conference, which this year will take place in Orlando, FL at the Coronado Springs Hotel and Conference Center on March 17, 2018. A number of PAMA members presenting include:Deanna McBroom, Jennie Morton, Dr. Jeff Russell, Dr. Charles Turon, and MTNA keynote speaker, Dr. Eckart Altenmüller.
- Gail Berenson and Brenda Wristen continue to co-chair a wellness series that MTNA has published in its journal, The American Music Teacher, and is now in its fourth year. This year’s authors are all PAMA members: Deanna McBroom, Jennie Morton and Dr. Carina Joly.
Long Range Planning Committee

- The committee considered several options for the 2020 meeting. At this time, the best prospective site is New Orleans. The faculty from Tulane and Louisiana State University medical schools could be drawn upon. While the symphony orchestra and ballet are not in season during the summer, there will be plenty of classical and non-classical music and dance events/performers in the city while we are there.
Board Action: The Board thanked the Long Term Planning Committee on their thoughtful consideration of different options for the site of the Annual Conference in 2020. The Board approved the Long Term Planning Committee’s recommendation for New Orleans to be the site of the 2020 PAMA Annual Conference.
Membership Committee

- Retiree/Senior Membership – pending demographic statistics. A possible consideration is to discount this category to that of a student membership.
- Further ideas being discussed by the membership committee - renewal notices, referral discounts, and working with a PR firm on promotion.
- The membership committee would like collaboration with other committees to improve social media content for members and outreach at host cities to draw new members in.

- The nominating committee will discuss potential nominees for the upcoming slate to include the position of President – Elect. The nominees will be sent out to the membership prior to the annual meeting so the slate can be voted on at the annual meeting in June.

- Referral queries from performing artists and health care practitioners (PAMA members and Non-members) responded to as they arise. This has included embouchure issues, posture and chin rest problems, wrist pain and others.

- The PAMA RC will be holding a workshop titled "PAM Grants: How to Seek and Apply for Opportunities to Fund PAM Research and Programs" on Sunday, July 1st from 4-5:30pm. We have a diverse panel of speakers from all over the globe that will help you navigate this process. We look forward to having you join us for this session!
- Our Research Committee Chair will also be presenting on using validated measures for practice and research. She will discuss the importance of using reliable and valid measures in PAM.

Symposium 2018 Planning Committee

- The schedule is complete and posted on the website. There are two panel discussions which are in the final stages of organization.
- We are pleased to announce our Keynote Speakers. Confirmed speakers include: Dr. Vilayanur Ramachandran, University of California, San Diego to speak on the subject of the relationship between creativity and synesthesia; Dr. Ingo Titze, National Center for Voice & Speech, University of Utah to speak on understanding vocal performance in the 21st century; and Dr. Scott Powell, orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician and founder member of the band Sha Na Na speaking on the partnership with MusiCares to bring free medical care to musicians who cannot afford insurance.
- Two invited speakers have confirmed participation: Michael Lyle, four-time Emmy-Award winning Foley Artist to speak about the occupational challenges of this profession and Anthony DeLongis, fight director for stage and screen to speak about occupational and health/safety challenges for actors who are required to do fight scenes. Mr. DeLongis will also demonstrate weapons training to the audience.
- The committee was successful in securing the maximum grant award from Chapman University of $10,000 to be used to fund the opening reception, additional guest speaker fees, staffing, and venue costs.
- A Facebook campaign was launched to market the symposium to targeted communities in major metropolitan areas. This campaign will run until the first day of the symposium.

Are you interested in being published in a magazine? International Musician magazine is accepting submissions for their wellness feature "To Your Health".
International Musician magazine is the official monthly publication of the American Federation of Musicians, serving 80,000 professional musicians in the United States and Canada. The readers of the International Musician are professional musicians working in all genres of music. They run the gamut from classical to country and from polka to punk. They tour and record. They play in clubs and in symphonies.
If you are a PAMA Member, please consider submitting an article. To Your Health articles should be around 650 words and written directly to the layman musician, who is not a health expert. The article should offer direct, helpful tips and advice, and not just information about various health conditions. All articles are subject to approval and editing from the editors.
Send your article to Dorry Allen at services@artsmed.org to be considered. You will be notified via email if your article has been accepted. Please note that the Research Committee will only review submissions received from currently active PAMA members in good standing with the organization.
