Greetings!
For the 2017 “No Gain with Pain” International PAMA Symposium, 170 participants from 17 countries came together in Snowmass to share their research and educational endeavors related to “Preventing and Overcoming Physical and Emotional Pain in Performing Artists”. Kudos to Dr. Susan Raeburn and Dr. Jason Hu for their leadership of the Conference Committee for the legendary Symposium. Special thanks to the inspiring and informative Keynotes by Paul Williams and Dr. D. Andrew Tompkins.
PAMAengage! is participation in PAMA by our growing Membership. Through PAMA Notes, each PAMA Member will be included in the planning process for next year’s PAMA Symposium in Orange, California. All Committee Chairs also welcome Members to join in on the exciting work of their Committees.
Over the last year, regional conferences were hosted in California, Florida, Cuba, Massachusetts, and Toronto. Stay tuned on PAMA Notes for information on Regional PAMA Conferences in the upcoming year.
With each Member having a voice in the organization, through the Committees’ commitment to accomplish their self-directed goals, and the growth of our successful Regional Conferences, we all build on the Legacy of PAMA to advocate our organization’s mission!

The Adelaide, Melbourne, Queensland, Sydney, Tasmanian and West Australian Symphony Orchestras recently welcomed the delivery of a major report on world’s best practice in occupational health and safety for orchestral musicians. The team of internationally renowned professionals was led by PAMA member Bronwen Ackermann. In addition to assessments and interventions, the team has published multiple academic articles on all aspects of musicians' health and safety. In addition to a report, the team has produced a practical handbook for use by orchestral musicians.
The Sound Practice final report and Health Handbook for Orchestral Musicians will be made available to the public through the participating orchestras’ websites, as well as from the Australia Council for the Arts.

Glamor and Grit: Building An Entourage for Health
The theme for our 2018 symposium is oriented around combining all the facets that facilitate improved health support in the arts, to ensure that performing artists' needs are addressed from all angles. These include:
- Health education in performing arts training (physical and psychological)
- Access to appropriate health care
- Training & educating Performing Arts Medicine specialists to meet the needs of this population
- Addressing the cultural biases that perpetuate unhealthy habits/ practices in the arts
- Creating safe working environments for performers
The deadline for abstract submissions is October 15, 2017.
The abstract submission system will be open in August 2017.

Articles Wanted
Are you interested in being published in a magazine? International Musician magazine is accepting submissions for their wellness feature "To Your Health".
International Musician magazine is the official monthly publication of the American Federation of Musicians, serving 80,000 professional musicians in the United States and Canada. The readers of the International Musician are professional musicians working in all genres of music. They run the gamut from classical to country and from polka to punk. They tour and record. They play in clubs and in symphonies.
If you are a PAMA Member, please consider submitting an article. To Your Health articles should be around 650 words and written directly to the layman musician, who is not a health expert. The article should offer direct, helpful tips and advice, and not just information about various health conditions. All articles are subject to approval and editing from the editors.
Send your article to Dorry Allen at services@artsmed.org to be considered. You will be notified via email if your article has been accepted. Please note that the Research Committee will only review submissions received from currently active PAMA members in good standing with the organization.
